Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, the son of a Spanish nobleman and black former slave. He became a Dominican friar at a young age and was known for his humility and kindness. He cared bravely for the very sick, founded a home for orphans, and kept an animal shelter at his sister's house. Despite his desire to minister to the world, he served faithfully in Peru his entire life.
