Born in Assisi, Italy, around the year 1181, Francis was born wealthy but gave away all that he owned to follow Christ in humility. He soon attracted many followers and today the Franciscan order is among the most well known. Francis had a special place in his heart for nature, but his greatest love was God and fellow man. He believed that true faith could lead to "perfect joy."
