In the year 1830, Our Lady appeared in a vision to Saint Catherine Laboure and instructed her to have a two-sided medal struck according to what she saw in the vision. This decal shows the front side of that medal.
Mary is poised upon the world, symbolizing her queenship of heaven and earth. The rays shining from her hands represent the graces she obtains for those who ask them of her. She is standing on the head of the serpent, symbolizing her great role in the work of salvation promised by God in the protoevengelium (Gen. 3:15) — that through her the head of the serpent would be crushed. And the apple in the serpent’s mouth stands for the devil’s utter defeat as well, and the undoing of his power over mankind. Finally, the petition surrounding the image is the same that surrounded Saint Catherine’s vision:
“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!”
