Born in Italy in 1890, Maria Goretti was only 11 years old when she was attacked by her neighbor. After pleading more for his soul than her own safety, Maria died from her wounds a day later. Maria's attacker attended her canonization in 1950 and died twenty years later, having prayed to Maria every day. Maria is now the patron of girls and victims of abuse.
